Apple's iOS 13.4.1 Fixes FaceTime Bug, Now Available for 2020 iPhone SE

Apple released iOS 13.4.1 to the public on April 7 but also pushed out the update for the new second-generation iPhone SE model on April 23, one day before the device's official release. The update fixes a FaceTime bug and Bluetooth quick action failure that appeared in iOS 13.4.

According to Apple, the 13.4.1 update addresses the two bugs just mentioned. To elaborate, it resolves a FaceTime issue where devices running iOS 13.4 could not jump into calls with older devices running iOS 9.3.6 and earlier or Mac OS X 10.11.6 and earlier. Additionally, it patches a bug where choosing "Bluetooth" from the Settings app's quick actions menu on the home screen would fail.

The update came precisely two weeks after the release of iOS 13.4, which introduced at least 33 new features and changes to compatible iPhone models. And, according to Aaron Zollo, since "most" of the new iPhone SE models ship with iOS 13.4 running, Apple began pushing out iOS 13.4.1 on April 23. Apple's security updates listing confirms the iPhone SE (2nd generation) support.

Apple's release strategy for iOS has deviated from its typical path, as of late. The company released the first beta for iOS 13.4.5 after releasing iOS 13.4, skipping 13.4.1, 13.4.2, 13.4.3, and 13.4.4. Based on today's release, it appears Apple is saving those minor numbers for official updates, likely to contain bug fixes and security patches rather than significant new features or changes.

• Fixes an issue where devices running iPadOS 13.4 could not participate in FaceTime calls with devices running iOS 9.3.6 and earlier or OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and earlier
• Addresses an issue on iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation) and iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) where the flashlight may not turn on after tapping the Flashlight button in Control Center or on the Lock screen
• Addresses a bug with the Settings app where choosing Bluetooth from the quick actions menu on the Home screen would fail

To update to iOS 13.4.1, open the Settings app on your iPhone, then tap "General" –> "Software Update." Follow the on-screen instructions to begin downloading the software to your device, then continue to start updating. You can also just wait for it to install automatically if you have "Automatic Updates" enabled.
