Name: Laura Jo Provencher, husband Taylor, and their golden retriever Hobbes
Location: We are from Nashville, Tennessee but are currently traveling all over the U.S.!
Size: Roughly 200 square feet
Type of home: 1988 Airstream Limited
Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned
Laura Jo and her husband Taylor had long been interested in minimalism and following the adventures of strangers on the internet traveling full-time in mobile homes. When Taylor found an Airstream for sale, the couple saved money for a few months so that they could purchase their own home-on-wheels.
Though a dreamy, minimal, cozy boho tiny home now, “Penelope” (as the couple has named their Airstream) certainly didn’t look that way when they first bought it. In fact on her blog, Laura Jo referred to it as “[t]hirty-four feet of aluminum disaster.”
The couple reports the interior was in rough shape—think no flooring and brown recluse spiders hanging around—but they spent two years renovating the Airstream “on the budget of a barista and a dog walker,” she wrote.
“The process was brutal. And thrilling. And miserable. And expensive. And amazing. And horrible. I threatened to burn her to the ground no less than approximately 200 times. But we did it. We took her tired, old, sad interior and turned her into a home.”
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Describe your home’s decor style in 5 words: Cozy, minimalistic, bohemian, simple, warm.
What’s your favorite thing about your home? I love that we designed and renovated it ourselves so it’s more customized to us. I also love that we can travel wherever we want with it.
What’s your least favorite thing about your home? General annoyances that come with an older trailer: leaks, dumping, random things breaking regularly, etc.
What’s your best small space trick? The two O’s: Optimizing and organizing. It’s crucial to optimize your space when living tiny. That might mean adding a little shelf in the back of the closet or a tiny little basket under the bathroom counter; seeking out creative options to store things so that everything has a place and can be easily organized. Having a “home” for things helps you to stay organized because clutter can build up in about two minutes in a tiny home!
Thanks Laura Jo and Taylor!
