There should be a word for that incredible feeling you get when you pull up ratty, old carpet and find gorgeous hardwood floors. That’s the first thing Kristin Brady did—and felt—in her guest room.

While “it obviously hadn’t been updated in a while,” Kristin says of the space, “this was such a beautiful room and got gorgeous afternoon sun, so we knew we wanted to make this a welcoming space for guests.”

To come up with a design for the room that would feel like a “peaceful sanctuary,” Kristin and her husband worked virtually with Marcie Reid from Design Sixty Five, creating a concept on a budget and selecting new items (such as the bed, mirror, and dresser) to complement what the couple already owned (like the bench, rug, and that absolute showstopper of a chandelier).

Throughout the design process, the couple tried to really think hard about how their guests would actually use the space and the items in it. “We included chairs for our guests, a bench for their luggage, and hooks to hang towels or coats,” Kristin says. “We also wanted to include a dresser for them to unpack their things.”

It took about a month for the couple to have the room painted (Benjamin Moore’s White Heron), the lighting installed, and the new furniture and decor delivered. All in all, Kristin estimates that the refresh cost about $2,000.

The after strikes notes of Scandi-style interiors, as well as farmhouse modern, but all around the result is clear: The new bedroom is brighter and airier than before—with no major remodeling necessary. Now, it’s a relaxing and welcoming space where Kristin and her husband will one day be able to host family and friends.
