The shift to remote working in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has not slowed Google's efforts to fulfill its annual Android update cycle, as the third developer preview of Android 11 dropped on Thursday.

In addition to bug fixes and quality of life improvements for developers, among the new features included the developer preview that should make end-users happy is the addition of a true "clear all" command for notifications.

The current implementation dismisses priority and silent notifications, but leaves persistent, or "ongoing" notifications for certain apps that run constantly in the background. In Android 11, swiping away these persistent notifications will move them to the new "Apps active in background" section, where only the app's name is shown. But don't worry, you can bring the notification back with a tap.

Other improvements teased for Android 11 based on developer previews include chat bubbles, security enhancements, and more.

Available to download from the Android Developers website and flash for Pixel 2, 3, and 4 handsets, Android 11 Developer Preview 3 is the last developer preview before Google releases the first beta version of Android 11, scheduled to arrive in May for those with eligible devices who enroll in the Android Beta Program. The stable, public version of Android 11 should start hitting phones in Q3 2020.
